There is nothing sexier than a string quartet. Four people join as One. This union generates a paroxysm of sound, fury and unbearable sweetness. Emotion and relentless rhythm bring musicians and audience to heights of excitement and pleasure.The Sunrise String Quartet arose upon the Calgary scene early one cool but sunny Wednesday morning in January of 1997. Its members are good friends who had played together in various groups for many years.
Soon the Quartet was launched into a series of interesting gigs. Not just weddings and receptions, but school graduations, private parties, store openings. We were featured in a formal concert with Gordon Rumson, a well-known composer, premiering one of his works evoking the plight of children in the then Yugoslavian war. Later the College of the Rockies invited us to Cranbrook to perform a concert/lecture on Alexander Borodin. We also performed with the Kootenays Symphonie that weekend.
Another highlight on a separate trip was the "Moonlight Serenade" atop the peak of Mount Buchanan near Kazlo. In a unique display, we played as we watched the sun set in the West at the same time that the moon rose from behind the eastern range of mountains. Our audience, dressed in hiking boots and jackets, danced our minuets like graceful men and woman at an Elizabethan court. It was an uncanny blend of nature and civility at its best.
The Sunrise has appeared on the BIG BREAKFAST TV show several times over the years. Once to accompany a Roaring 20's fashion show with Scott Joplin and other oldtime tunes. Another time to celebrate International Day with Latin tunes.

We have a "sampler" CD with complete versions of our favorite pieces on the Order Our CD page. A Christmas CD is coming soon. All we ask is that you donate any sum you feel charitable to give. We assure you it will be put to good use. We hope to have a full-fledged master CD out by early Spring 2005.
Our geographical centre is Calgary, Alberta. We have probably played in just about every city in the area: Banff, Canmore, Airdrie, Kananaskis, Argenta in BC and that area around the Kootenays Lake, Waterton and as mentioned above, Cranbrook. We will go anywhere anytime to play our wonderful music.
